  Testimonial - Anthony Castleden - 24/9/2002

It was a somewhat reluctant pilgrim who arrived many years ago at the Walk venue at Kearsney College on a wet and misty weekend, knowing none of the pilgrims. I expect, like so many other pilgrims, that I realised I had an appointment with God but I was peeved that He did not share His plan with me beforehand. I recall that Thursday evening figuring out that there’d be 5 talks daily and that I’d just have to grin and bear it and see them through. Sort of, ‘take your medicine – it’s good for you’.

Yet God is good, for the entire weekend I was soaked in His love and tenderness. There were very moving times when the Holy Spirit moved mightily as a wind of renewal and encouragement, people were affirmed and encouraged and I myself received His touch most profoundly.

The Lord God had His way – for in no uncertain terms He made it clear that He wanted me to serve Him in the ordained ministry. This was quite a revelation and I had to significantly adjust to this call on my life. Yet even them He had gone before, for the church had by that stage come to recognise and value the need for men and women, who remained in their secular vocations whilst serving as ordained clergy in the church.

It is with joy that I was ordained a deacon and later in August this year, a priest or presbyter. I thank God for His wonderful ways and that He blesses the Walk to Emmaus and uses it to strengthen His church. I count it a privilege to have worked in the conference room on several walks as a lay person and to be a part of St Elsewhere also. It is with a deep sense of awe that I find God using ordinary people for the building up of His church and that He should call me in the way He has. May He have all the glory
